Presbyterian Historical Society, the oldest denominational historical society in the country, was founded in 1852 in Philadelphia "to collect and preserve materials and promote the knowledge of the history of the Presbyterian Church." In 1952 the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. established a Dept. of History under the Office of the General Assembly, took possession of the Society's holdings, and coordinated its activities with the Historical Society, which became a voluntary support organization for the Dept. of History. It is, nevertheless, the name by which the Dept. is usually known. After the 1983 reunion, the Presbyterian Historical Society merged with the Historical Foundation of the Presbyterian and Reformed Churches in Montreat (org. 1902), the comparable historical agency of the PCUS. The Presbyterian Historical Society has been variously called: the Office of History; the Dept. of Historical Research and Conservation; the Dept. of History; and, Presbyterian Historical Association. In 1990 the name of the combined organizations was Presbyterian Historical Society/Dept. of History.
