Griffin, John Smith, 1807-1899.

John Smith Griffin was sent as a missionary to Oregon in 1839 by the North Litchfield Association of Connecticut and he became pastor of the First Connecticut Church in Oregon. He married in St. Louis and spent time in Lapwai, Washington Territory, Snake River country, and Vancouver. He settled on the Tualatin Plains as a farmer and in 1848 bought the Lapwai press from H. H. Spalding and published The Oregon American and Evangelical Unionist.

John Smith Griffin (1807–1899) was an Oregon pioneer and missionary who participated at the Champoeg Meetings that created the Provisional Government of Oregon in 1843.

Henry Sewell (1819-1869) came to Oregon in 1843 and married Mary Ann Jones Gerrish in 1846.

Henry Sewell (1819-1869) came to Oregon in 1843 and married Mary Ann Jones Gerrish in 1846.

He was a founding member of the West Union Baptist Church in 1848 and committed suicide in Hillsboro, Oregon in 1869.
