John Early was born in Ireland on July 1, 1814. At the age of 19 he immigrated to the United States and enrolled at Mount St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg, Md. In February of 1834 he transferred to Georgetown College, where he studied philosophy and theology. In that same year he joined the Society of Jesus and in 1845 was ordained to the priesthood. From 1848 to 1851 Father Early served as president of the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. With eight other Jesuits he founded Loyola College in Baltimore in 1852 and was its first president from 1853 to 1858. He served as the 26th president of Georgetown University from 1858 to 1865 and then returned to Loyola as its president for the years 1866-1870. In 1870 he became the 28th president of Georgetown and served in that capacity until his death on May 23, 1873.
