He attended Harvard Law School where he earned an M.A. degree (1930), Bachelor of Law degree (1933), and Doctor of Judicial Science degree (1943). After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II he accepted an appointment at the University of Minnesota Law School in 1946. In 1956 he became Dean of the Law School and held this position until 1972. Subsequently he taught at Hastings College of Law in San Francisco for 22 years. William Lockhart died in 1995 in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1995.
