Holden, Francis Powers, 1810-1893.
Capitalist, stock raiser. Abington, Mass.-born maternal uncle of Delia Hammond Locke, wife of founder of Lockeford, Calif. Raised sheep and acquired real estate in San Joaquin and Calaveras Counties (1860-1882). Active in Sons of Temperance (1860-1863), Society of Good Templars (1887-1888) and Congregational Society of Stockton, Calif. (1875-1893). Early a widower, "Uncle" Holden was an epistolary confidante of several female members of two generations of close-knit Locke family. Their correspondence evokes hardship and loneliness of women's lives in rural 19th century California.
