Saunders, William, 1822-1900
Variant namesWilliam Saunders (1822-1900) horticulturist and landscape gardener, was appointed Superintendent of the Experimental Gardens of the newly created Department of Agriculture in 1862. He established and extensive collection of trees on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. and developed a system of street tree-planting used in the District of Columbia in the 1870. He wrote widely on general horticulture and his publication include some 3, 000 titles.
