Second Seminole War commander of the 4th Infantry. Previously served with distinction in the Niagra campaigns of the War of 1812. As commander of the infantry, Foster made detailed daily entries about scouting expeditions, skirmishes, camp routines, and cattle round ups. He also describes Fort Alabama (renamed Fort Foster) and Fort Dade. He and Henry Prince cover the 1837 expedition into the Cove of the Withlacoochee in search of Seminole warriors.
