James Rodney Schlesinger was born on February 15, 1929 in New York, New York. He received an A.B. from Harvard University in 1950, and an A.M. and Ph.D. from Harvard in 1952 and 1956. He was a professor at the University of Virginia from 1955 to 1963, and a senior staff member at the RAND Corporation from 1963 to 1967. He worked at the Bureau of the Budget, serving as assistant director in 1969, and acting deputy director from 1969 to 1970. From 1970 to 1971 he was assistant director of the Office of Management and Budget, and from 1971 to 1973 he was chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission. He briefly served as director of the Central Intelligence Agency from February to July 1973. In 1973 he was appointed by President Nixon as Secretary of Defense, until he was fired by President Ford in 1975. He was a visiting scholar at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies from 1976 to 1977, and in 1977 he was appointed Assistant to the President, advising President Carter on energy matters before the creation of the Department of Energy. He was appointed the first Secretary of Energy in 1977, and remained Secretary until he was forced to resign in 1979 after the Three Mile Island incident.
