Louis Simonin (1830-1886) was a mining engineer who traveled in California and the West in 1867. He published a report of his travels titled Le Grand-Ouest des Etats-Unis (1869). This work was translated into English by Wilson Ober Clough, a former professor of American Studies at University of Wyoming. Clough published translations of other portions of Le Grand-Ouest as The Rocky Mountain West in 1867 (1966). Simonin's writings on California include observations on historical and sociological phenomena, as well as on mines.
