Yeager, Hiram B., circa 1818-circa 1863

Hiram B. Yeager was born in Pottstown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, around 1818. Previously working as a hatter, Yeager enlisted in the army at the onset of the Mexican War, joining Company A of the Corps of Engineers in Philadelphia on 1846 August 2. He and his unit trained at the United States Military Academy at West Point during the summer months of 1846; Company A later participated in the American landing at Vera Cruz, Mexico, and accompanied Winfield Scott’s column on its march to Mexico City. Yeager received an appointment as an officer in the Third Regiment of Dragoons in 1848 March. He was honorably discharged with his unit on 1848 July 31 at Jefferson Barracks, a post near St. Louis, Missouri.

Yeager served in militia companies in Pennsylvania after the Mexican War. By 1861, he was also employed as a clerk. During the Civil War, Yeager re-enlisted in the army, serving as a Captain in the 20th Pennsylvania Volunteers (1861 April 26-1861 August 6), a Second Lieutenant in the 99th Pennsylvania Volunteers (1862 January 18-1862 April 2), and a captain in the 68th Pennsylvania Volunteers (1862 September 2-1863 January 7). Yeager’s widow, Fannie, filed a pension application in 1864 December; combined with materials in the Hiram B. Yeager papers, this information indicates that his death occurred in late 1863 or in 1864.
