A resident of Pennsylvania, Hiram B. Yeager enlisted in the U.S. Army, Corps of Engineers in 1846.

Serving in the Mexican War, Yeager received an appointment as an officer in the Third Regiment of Dragoons in 1848. After the war, he served with militia companies in Pennsylvania, and with the 68th and 99th Pennsylvania Volunteers during the Civil War.
