Pearsall was educated at the University of Manchester, was Chair of Botany at the University of Sheffield (1938-1944) and Quain Professor of Botany at the University of London, 1944- He was known for his botanical work on the Lake District of England and elsewhere and for his book: Mountains and moorlands.
