City University of New York. Centro de Estudios Puertorriqueños
Variant namesEstablished in 1973, the founding of the Centro de Estudios Puertorriqueños (Centro) was the culmination of years of struggle on the part of Puerto Rican faculty, students and community members to carve out a space for intellectual inquiry into the Puerto Rican/Latino experience. Intended on providing support to the then fledgling Puerto Rican Studies departments within the City University of New York (CUNY), the Centro was also formed to create grassroots links between academia and the Puerto Rican community, promoting a connection and continuity between research and policy debates intrinsic to the community's concerns. Housed at numerous locations throughout CUNY up until the late 1970s, Centro finally came to be situated on the campus of Hunter College in 1983, where it has remained since. Today, Centro continues its mission of producing scholarship of relevance to the Puerto Rican community in the U.S. and is now equally as dedicated to the preservation of the history of the Puerto Rican Diaspora through its Library and Archives.
