Erich Hertzmann was born in Krefeld, Germany on Dec. 14, 1902 and died in Berkeley, California on March 3, 1963. He studied musicology in Frankfurt and Berlin, receiving his Ph. D. in 1931 with his dissertation on Adrian Willaert. In 1938 he emigrated to the U.S. and taught at Columbia University until his death. Hertzmann also lectured at Princeton University from 1946-49. He was awarded a Guggenheim fellowship in 1949. He wrote extensively on Renaissance music, Mozart, and Beethoven.
