Thomas Pringle, Scottish poet, was educated at Edinburgh University and became editor of the Edinburgh monthly magazine in 1817. He spent six years as government librarian in Cape Town, South Africa, returning to England in 1826, where he became active in the Anti-Slavery Society. He published several volumes of poems that indicate his humanitarian attitudes.
