Bernice Leary was born on August 19, 1890 in Ionia, Iowa to James Leary and Josephine Bell Leary. She attended Iowa State Teachers' College (now the University of Northern Iowa) for one year but received her B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. in education from the University of Chicago. Leary held teaching and administrative positions at a number of high schools and colleges but her main role was that of curriculum specialist for the federal government and for various universities.

In the late 1940s to late 1950s, Leary travelled to various countries working with local educators. She retired in 1955 and then moved to Webster City, Iowa and later, a retirement home in Grinnell, Iowa. She died on March 20, 1973.
