Rumford Institute (Waltham, Mass.)
Lyceum and library established by Boston Manufacturing Company in 1826 for the purpose of "maintaining a library, advancement of useful arts and sciences, and providing public instruction through lectures"; incorporated in 1858; final program presented during the season of 1886/1887. In 1863 the institute's 3700 books donated to the town and provided the foundation for the Waltham Public Library.
