Ellen Haynes Green was born in Tampa, Fla. on May 19, 1915. She attended Port Tampa Elementary School and Booker T. Washington Junior and Senior High Schools. She became involved in the Tampa Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1955. Elected president in 1959, Green held various offices and participated in both local and national civil rights activities before ill health ended her work with the NAACP. Green also was active in other civic organizations, including the National Council of Negro Women, the West Tampa Advisory Council, the Southwest Civic Club, and the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA).
