Founded in 1854 for the purpose of offering advice and practical assistance, as well as charitable aid to newly arrived German immigrants in Cincinnati, Ohio; and to protect them against abuses. The society was originally called the Allgemeiner Deutscher Einwanderungs-Verein (General German Immigration Society); the name was amended between 1860 and 1865. The main type of assistance offered by the Society's agency was job referrals. In addition, bread, groceries, shoes, wood and bedding were distributed; letters were written; lost luggage was located; and small money grants were made for travel or other purposes.
