Zu, short for Abzuga, was the eldest daughter of Franklin G. and Harriet Clark Adams. She served as her father's unpaid assistant when he became the secretary of the new Kansas State Historical Society (Topeka). When she began receiving a salary she also got the title of librarian. She served in this capacity until her death in 1911. She never married but had one adopted daughter.
