University of Washington history professor and administrator, and Seattle civic leader.

Solomon Katz (1909-1989) was educated at Cornell University, and taught Roman, Byzantine, and medieval history at the University of Washington beginning in 1936. During WWII he served in U.S. Army Air Force Intelligence in Europe. From 1954 to 1960 he chaired the History Dept. at the UW, from 1960 to 1966 he was Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, from 1965 to 1975 was Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, and Professor of History from 1975 until his retirement in 1979. He served on the boards of numerous civic and cultural organizations in Seattle, including the Haas Foundation, which benefitted schoolchildren; Lakeside School; Patrons of Northwest Civic, Cultural, and Charitable Organizations; Seattle Art Museum; Seattle Arts Commission; and Seattle Repertory Theatre. He died in 1989.
