Geologist.
Born on October 17, 1899 in Bismarck, North Dakota. He earned a B.A. in geology in 1922 from the University of Oregon, and a Ph. D. in economic geology from Harvard University in 1931. He was a professor and State Geologist. The American Geological Institute awards its most prestigious annual award in his honor. Mount Ian Campbell in the Sierra Nevada has also been named in his honor. He died on February 11, 1978.
