Born on October 17, 1899 in Bismarck, North Dakota. He earned a B.A. in geology in 1922 from the University of Oregon, and a Ph. D. in economic geology from Harvard University in 1931. He was a professor and State Geologist. The American Geological Institute awards its most prestigious annual award in his honor. Mount Ian Campbell in the Sierra Nevada has also been named in his honor. He died on February 11, 1978.

Ian Campbell (1899-1978) received his Ph. D. in economic geology from Harvard in 1931. Most of his career was spent at the California Institute of Technology, where he was a professor in the Division of Geological Sciences (1931-1959) and a research associate (1959-1970).
