Upware Republic Society

Hide Profile

In November 1851 undergraduates from Cambridge University formed a independent 'republic' at an inn at Upware, Cambridgeshire. They appointed officials, including clerics and consuls, and kept minutes of meetings. The members of the society included Samuel Butler. The republic became a 'kingdom' during the 1860s, following the involvement of Richard Ramsay Fielder, of Jesus College. The society was relaunched in 2001 by Mark Valentine.
