Massie was an early pioneer surveyor of the Ohio River area, founder of Chilicothe (Adams County, Ohio), a member of the Ohio Constitutional Convention, and a candidate for Ohio governor, 1807 (from the "Life of Edward Tiffin," p.21). Tiffin was a physician and surgeon, Commissioner of the General Land Office of the U.S., Surveyor-General of the Northwest, Prothonotary of Ross Co. (Ohio), Speaker of the House of Representatives (Ohio), Pres. of the Ohio Constitutional Convention, the first Governor of Ohio, 1803-1807, and U.S. Senator, 1807-1809. (For further information see the "Life of Edward Tiffin.") Eustis was Governor of Massachusetts, 1823-1825, Minister (Ambassador) to Holland, Secretary of State under Pres. Madison, a Boston Physician, and Revolutionary War surgeon. (Information from OCLC name authority.) Smith was U.S. Attorney General, Secretary of the Navy, 1802-1805, Secretary of State, 1809-1811, State Senator from Maryland, a member of the House of Delegates, 1796-1800, and Provost of the University of Maryland. The Ohio land was given to the federal government by Virginia to satisfy bounty land warrants issued for military service during the Revolutionary War.
