W. David Baird, born on July 8, 1939 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, was a member of the faculty of the Department of History at the University of Arkansas from 1968 to 1978. He returned to his home state to the History Department at Oklahoma State University from 1978-1988, when he was named Howard A. White Professor of History at Pepperdine University, Malibu, California; there he became Chair of the Division of the Humanities and Teacher Education in 1994. He has written nine books in Native American history as well as two works on the history of Oklahoma and numerous articles.
