History Day was conceived in 1973 by members of the Department of History at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, as an effort to revive interest in history by allowing students in grades six to twelve to actively participate in historical research. Students prepare individual or group papers, projects, performances and media presentations, responding to an overall theme chosen for that year. Projects are then judged in two age groups, Junior (grades 6-8) and Senior (grades 9-12) by history professionals. Competition begins at the district level with the two top winners in each category in each division advancing to a state contest. Winners there then move on to the national competition held at the University of Maryland. Prizes are given, ranging from certificates, ribbons, patches, medals, trophies and books. Cash prizes, scholarships and European trips are awarded at the National level. Oklahoma became involved in National History Day in 1981.
