Thomas Coram, philanthropist and shipwright, was born in 1668 in Dorsetshire, England.
In 1694 he settled in Taunton, Mass. to promote shipbuilding and remained in the vicinity for the next ten years. Following his return to England, he became known for his public spirit and charity work in England and the colonies. In later years, Coram neglected his own private affairs and died a poor man in 1751.
