Variant namesThe Gulf and Ship Island Railroad was chartered by the Mississippi Legislature in 1850, 1856, and 1887 for the purpose of building a railroad from Gulfport to Jackson; it operated from 1900 until acquired by the Illinois Central in 1924 and played a major role in the development of southern Mississippi.
