Variant namesBorn in Todd's Hill, Alabama; attended schools in Tennessee; founded Sylvarena Academy, Flowers, Mississippi; entered the legal profession and by 1858 had established a practice in Raleigh, Mississippi; fought with the 16th Mississippi Infantry during the Civil War; established the railroad line between New Orleans and Meridian; president of the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad Company, and founder of Gulfport, Laurel, and Hattiesburg; State Senator and Circuit Court Judge.

Born in Todds Hill, Alabama, in 1837, William Harris Hardy established careers as an attorney, Confederate officer, state senator and judge in Mississippi. Owing to his role in railroad development, he founded the cities of Hattiesburg, Gulfport and Laurel. He married his first wife, Sallie Ann Johnson, in 1860. They had six children before her death in 1872. William Hardy died in Gulfport, Mississippi, in 1917.
