African-American attorney, educator, and civil rights activist, of Sumter, S.C.; graduate of Morris College, 1926; school teacher, coach, and school administrator, 1926-1937; educational advisor for Civilian Conservation Corps, 1937-1942; admitted to South Carolina Bar, 1947; practiced law in Sumter, 1947-1954; attorney with Federal Trade Commission, Washington, D.C., 1960-1971.
