Texas Historical Foundation
Variant namesThe Texas Historical Foundation (THF) was created at the first meeting of the Texas State Historical Survey Committee (TSHSC) in 1953 as the committee’s fundraising and grant writing arm. The TSHSC, since 1973 known as the Texas Historical Commission (THC), was created in 1953 by Senate Concurrent Resolution 44 of the 53rd Texas Legislature, Regular Session, to administer a comprehensive program of historic building and architecture preservation in the state of Texas. Initially a subcommittee of the TSHSC, in 1965 the Foundation became a separate entity whose mission remained the financial support of the TSHSC. In addition to its fundraising activities, the THF also publishes a quarterly magazine, Heritage, which highlights preservation efforts in Texas, including work on historic buildings, and various museum and archival collections.

Founded as a fundraising arm of the Texas Historical Commission in 1954, the Texas Historical Foundation (THF) supports research on Texas history and the preservation of artifacts and historical documentation. In 1982, a suggestion made at a THF photographic workshop for information professionals sparked the beginning of a project to survey photographic collections in Texas and create a descriptive guide. The next year, the foundation mailed surveys to repositories in the state before receiving funding in 1984 and 1985. Richard Pearce-Moses became head of the guide project, sending out a more extensive mail survey and visiting several of the larger collections. In 1987, Texas A&M University Press published the resulting descriptive guide, Photographic Collections in Texas: A Union Guide .
