William Henry Matchett is a poet and Emeritus Professor of Literature at the University of Washington.

Born in 1923 in Chicago, IL, Matchett earmed a B.A. (1949) from Swarthmore College, and an M.A. (1950) and PhD. (1957) from Harvard University. He began teaching at the University of Washington in Seattle in 1954, and was appointed a full professor in 1966. A member of the Society of Friends, Matchett was Chair of the executive committee of the Pacific Northwest office of the American Friends Service Committee. He was appointed editor of the Modern Language Quarterly in 1963. Matchett has contributed poems to Harper's, The New Yorker, and Harper's Bazaar, short stories to Arizona Quarterly and Moderator, and articles to PMLA and Essays in Criticism. Literary awards include the Hayes Prize, 1948, and the Furioso poetry prize in 1952.
