Parvin graduated from law school in Cincinnati in 1837. In 1838 he was appointed private secretary to Robert Lucas, former governor of Ohio. Parvin accompanied Lucas to Iowa in August of 1838. From 1839 until 1860 he practiced law in Bloomington, Iowa (now Muscatine). In 1860 he moved to Iowa City to teach natural history at the State University. In 1870 he retired and devoted his time to the secretarial duties of the Grand Lodge of Iowa of Free and Accepted Masons. During his legal career Parvin served as a prosecuting attorney, judge of the probate court of Muscatine County, clerk of courts in the United States court system, and register of the state land office. In addition to these positions he held offices in the State Agricultural Society, the State Historical Society and the State Teachers' Association.
