Scudder, John M. (John Milton), 1829-1894
Variant namesJohn Milton Scudder, researcher, teacher, and administrator, was "the most conspicious man in 19th century Eclecticism" [Harvey W. Felter].
As Dean of the Eclectic Medical Institute from 1862 to the late 1880s, Scudder shaped the Eclectic movement through his management of the Eclectic Medical Institute, and through his books and research. On the brink of insolvency, the school was quickly turned around under Scudder, and became the most important Eclectic school. Scudder edited the Eclectic Medical Journal, and also served the school as a professor from 1857 until his death.
