Richardson, Helen R. (Helen Ruth), 1891-
Variant namesHelen Virginia Bernice Jacobson (Richardson) was born November 26, 1914 in Winthrop, Sibley County (Minn.). She graduated from Bethesda Hospital School of Nursing (St. Paul) in 1937 as a registered nurse. In 1939 she was the third woman to be hired as a stewardess by Northwest Airlines, which required that its stewardesses be registered nurses. In addition to her flight attendant duties, Jacobson co-authored the airline's stewardess training manual, trained new stewardesses, and represented the airline in public relations. She resigned her position in 1942 when she married Robert J. Richardson, as mandated by company policy.
