James Morton Peterson (1850-1899) established the J.M. Peterson bank and the J. M. Peterson & Co. mercantile house. He was also the mayor of Richfield, Utah.

James Morton Peterson was born 15 April 1850 and emigrated from Denmark to Utah when he was twelve. He established the J. M. Peterson bank in 1883 and the J. M. Peterson & Co. mercantile house in 1887. He served as mayor of Richfield, Utah, four times. He was married to Laura Christine Hansen until their divorce in 1884, and remarried in 1896, to Sarah Johnson. He had three children. He died on 9 April 1899 from a combination of heart trouble, sciatic rheumatism and general debility.
