Robert R. Thompson (1820-1908) was a steamboat builder and financier.

He was born in Pennsylvania and crossed the plains to Oregon City in 1846. In 1848 to 1849 he went to California to mine for gold; after which he traveled to The Dalles where he took a donation land claim. He served as an Indian agent there from 1854 to 1856. Eventually he became involved in Columbia River transportation, operating a fleet of boats. In 1860 he joined forces with the Oregon Steam Navigation Company. He helped incorporate the Oregon Central Railroad and had a part with John C. Ainsworth and Simeon G. Reed in developing important Portland business and financial enterprises.
