Researcher; Editorial assistant; Archivist. Researcher; Editorial assistant; Archivist. Brand was born in South Dakota, 1893, and graduated from Smith College, 1921. She was a researcher and editorial assistant for Ray Stannard Baker, biographer of Woodrow Wilson, in Amherst, MA, 1925-39, then was hired by the president's widow, Edith Wilson, to be custodian of the Woodrow Wilson papers at the Library of Congress, 1939-44. In 1944 she became assistant in the Library of Congress Manuscripts Division, then was Head of the Recent Manuscripts Section, 1950-56. She wrote numerous articles on archival issues and bibliographies and inventories for Library of Congress collections. Brand lived with companion Carol Piper in Washington , D.C. from 1941 until 1950, when they build a home in Vienna, Virginia. They remained there until they moved to a retirement home a few years before Brand's death in 1988.
