[Saxe Gotha was on a site originally called Fort Congaree, ca. 1718-1724, after which it was not garrisoned; in later years the site of the fort and surrounding area were informally called "The Congarees"; in 1734 the site was designated Congaree Township; in 1735 this township was renamed Saxe Gotha in honor of the birthplace of a daughter-in-law of King George II.].
