Edmund Valtman was born in Tallinn, Estonia on May 31, 1914. He sold his first drawings, illustrations for a childrens' book, at age 15. After studies in private schools and the Tallinn Art and Applied School, Valtman began his career as a cartoonist. Unable to continue his career in Estonia after the Soviet occupation, Valtman fled to Allied-controlled Germany where he stayed in a displaced persons camp for four years.

Valtman moved to the United States in 1949. He secured a position as an editorial cartoonist for the Hartford Times and remained at the Times for many years. An anti-Castro cartoon drawn by Valtman was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1962.
