William Kaufman, M.A. (UM '32), Ph.D. (UM '37), M.D. (UM '38), discovered in the 1940s that niacinamide, a form of vitamin B-3, can effectively treat symptoms in arthritic patients; also a prolific author who, in addition to two monographs on niacinamide, published over 80 articles, for both medical journals and popular magazines. Charlotte (Schnee) Kaufman (1918-2005), B.A. (UM '38) (m. 1940), assisted him in his niacinamide research, conducted at his Bridgeport, Connecticut private practice; also founded the Family Life Film Center of Connecticut, which she created to help bring together community members through educational film screenings and discussions.
