Richard E. Heckert was chairman and CEO of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company from 1986 to 1989.
Heckert was born in Oxford, Ohio, on January 13, 1924, and received his Ph. D. from the University of Illinois in organic chemistry in 1949. He joined the staff of Du Pont the same year as a research chemist, working on cellophane and films. He was named vice president in 1972, president and vice chairman in 1981, and chairman in 1986. Heckert was active in a number of national business, educational and philathropic organizations including the National Association of Manufacturers, of which he was board chairman in 1988-89, and the Carnegie Institution of Washington.
