Lawyer, politician, and planter, of Camden, S.C.; colonel and temporary brigadier general, commander, Second South Carolina Regiment, and Kershaw's Brigade, Confederate States of America; S.C. legislator and U.S. Congressman; lieutenant governor of South Carolina, 1880- 1882; served as Grand Master of Masons in South Carolina from 1881 to 1883; appointed consul general for Shanghai, China, 1886-1889, by Pres. Grover Cleveland.
