Randall, Dudley, 1914-2000

Hide Profile

Dudley Randall (1914-2000) created the Broadside Press in 1965 in Detroit (Mich.). He ran the press out of his home on limited funds, managing to publish the major African-American poetry of the period. Randall supported himself as a librarian at the University of Detroit. He put all profits back into the press. In 1978, Black Enterprise magazine called Randall "The father of the black poetry movement." He sold the press in 1985. Randall died in Aug. 2000. The Clarke Historical Library has a large collection of Broadside Press publications and a webpage about the Press.
