Samuel Fred Horton was born ca. 1895 and lived in Vilas, N.C. He attended Appalachian Training School (1912-1916) and Wake Forest College (1916-1917). He entered military service in 1918 and was stationed in Brest, France. He worked at Walnut Grove School, as principal of the Union High School (Greenville, W. Va.) and Millers Creek High School (Wilkes County, N.C.) in the 1920s. For 33 years he served as the principal of Cove Creek High School (N.C.). From 1942-1945 he served as Watauga County School superintendent while Howard Walker served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
