Bessie Zaban was born in 1898 in Atlanta, Ga., the daughter of Austrian immigrants. She married Howard Mumford Jones; they had eight children. During World War II she worked with the Window Shop, an organization that assisted Jewish refugees from Europe; later she worked for Harvard University Press and wrote three books. She died in 1997.
