Hnizdovsky, Jacques, 1915-1985
Variant namesBorn in Ukraine in 1915, Jacques Hnizdovsky studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and Zagreb. Mainly known for his woodcuts, Hnizdovsky was also an illustrator, painter, and art historian. He emigrated to the United States in 1949 and by the early 1960s, Hnizdovsky was participating in exhibits from Boston to Japan to the Soviet Union. He was widely exhibited and won numerous awards. His work is held by the National Museum of American Art, Cleveland Museum of Art, Boston Museum of Fine Art, and the Library of Congress. Jacques Hnizdovsky died in New York City in 1985.

Painter and printmaker Jacques Hnizdovsky (1915-1985) was born in Pylypcze, Ukraine. He came to the United States in 1949 and became a citizen in 1954. Prior to immigrating, he had studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Warsaw, and the Academy of Fine Arts, Zagreb. After coming to the U.S., Hnizdovsky, whose works were widely exhibited, won numerous prizes andawards. He was a member of many professional and Ukrainian American organizations.
