Griva, Edward, 1864-1948.

Hide Profile

Edward Griva was born September 20, 1864, in Turin, Italy. His Jesuit biography is unusual in that his seminary training and ordination were already complete at the time his was accepted into the Society of Jesus (1894). Within a year after entry Fr. Griva was fully engaged in the work of the Jesuits' Rocky Mountain Mission, and his career thereafter provides no better example of the Society's expectation of personal adaptability in its members. His many missionary assignments can be organized into four general groupings: Missions on the Fort Belknap and Crow Indian Reservations, Montana (1895-1898, 1904-1907, 1929-1931); missions and parishes on the Flathead Indian Reservation, Montana (1907-1912); missions on the Yakama Indian Reservation, Washington, and Umatilla Indian Reservation, Oregon (1898-1902); missions in Northeast Washington State, including the Colville Indian Reservation (1902-1903, 1913-1928, 1931-1947). Fr. Griva retired to the Jesuits' Mount St. Michael's Scholasticate residence near Spokane, Washington, in 1947. He died there October 21, 1948.
