The Council on Human Relations (f. 1955) was organized in Cleveland, Ohio, by a splinter group from the local chapter of the National Conference on Christians and Jews. It has operated from an office in The Arcade in downtown Cleveland since its establishment and is a non-financially participating member of the Federation for Community Planning. The Council's goal is to "promote understanding and appreciation among all persons and among the various religious, racial and cultural groups to which they belong." Its efforts are educational in nature and directed towards school children and young adults primarily. Among the activities it has sponsored are acquaintance luncheons (where an individual with an interesting background relates aspects of his or her life), the Green Circle program (a presentation given to elementary school children which promoted understanding while discussing differences among people), the Youth Council (an inter-high school activities group), and the "Churkendoose" play (presented at elementary schools, it demonstrates prejudice and its consequences). The group also participated in or sponsored workshops, seminars, and lectures for adults in the Cleveland area.
The group has been directed by James D. Nobel since its founding, and Howard Metzenbaum and George Steinbrenner III have served on its board of trustees.
